Not in Kansas anymore...
I've had dogs before. They were all my family dogs, which isn't exactly the same, but I thought I knew what I was in for. I grew up in upstate NY. Our dogs were big dogs who lived outside in their igloo doghouses most of the time. They were great companions, and I thought I knew all I needed to know about dogs before getting my own. This may have been the case, but what I didn't realize is the stark difference between owning a country dog and a city dog. I was NOT prepared to raise a 'city dog.' Sometimes I feel as though I have become the crazy lady who talks about her dog too much (and maybe I have) but then I step outside my building and walk by a dog birthday party in the dog park; hats, party favors, cake and all. At least I am not throwing birthday parties for my dog and all of his neighborhood dog friends. Yet.

My son (9) is dying for a dog, but I just can't see a way to have one in the city (we're in Roslindale). The idea of a dog having to sit in the house all day while we're at school/work pains me, and not having a place to run (other than when we'd visit a park) seems less than ideal. But my son is soooo sad.
ReplyDeleteI always thought if I were to have a dog in the city it would be a small dog. Like a dachshund. I like dachshunds. Liz
ReplyDeleteFunny that you mention the dog birthday party. A friend of mine recently attended one such event with her golden retriever. I thought she was unreasonably puppy-crazy. Guess not.
ReplyDeleteI also grew up in upstate NY (actually CNY) with large dogs (German Shephards). Once I moved to Boston, I got my first city dog, a beagle, not a great city dog on paper, but he has adapted to city life. But, he relishes our summer months back here in CNY with the fenced in yard. No dog walkers, picking up poop on the sidewalk, etc. I'm not sure who likes it better,me or the dogs!
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased that we're talking about our love for dogs and NOT cats. I can't figure out the charm of all the cat videos on Youtube. What is there to do with a cat? Dogs, (real ones, not the ones you can put in your pocket book), are absolutely the MVP of pets!
